Accessible Survey Design

Ipsos, 2023-2024

I took a personal interest in making the surveys that my team produced more accessible. Since our client in based throughout the United States and in Canada, this required familiarizing myself with the guidelines for each country. Luckily, ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) and AODA (Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act) both use the WCAG (Web Content Accessibility Guidelines) 2.0 as their standard. I then began the process of verifying the types of survey questions in Qualtrics that are compliant with the WCAG 2.0, which involved personally testing certain question types on assistive technology (such as screen readers) myself, due to lack of existing data online. After this exploration was complete, I was able to brainstorm ways in which my team could transition certain question types that are not currently accessible towards those that are without compromising historical data integrity or altering the existing survey logic built in Qualtrics. As of November 2023, I have presented my findings to my team and plans are in place to get client approval to change to accessible question types. I hope to present these findings to my larger department as well in order to expand the conversation on the importance of using accessible question types in market research.
