Discourse Coherence in Speakers with Aphasia

Indiana University, Spring & Fall 2022

This was my first fully independent research project! The goal of this project was to use both recorded interviews and MRI data in order to better understand the impact of brain damage on speech behavior, as well as identify similarities and differences between participants with various types of aphasia. In order to accomplish this, I learned how to draw lesions by hand on the individual MRI images, a skill that was painstaking but worth the effort! I also learned to program in R to conduct my statistical analysis on the behavioral data I collected from the recorded interviews. In the end, I was given the opportunity to present my findings twice, one in a poster session and once a selected speaker. My final product was a 40+ page document that I have bound on my bookshelf as a reminder of my dedication to research, my education, and myself over the course of 2022.
